Why is charles manson still on death row but scott peterson was executed shortly after his trial?

Wow, pick up a newspaper occasionally. Scott Peterson is alive and well and living on on death row. Charlie Manson is not on death row. His sentence was commuted (as was the death sentence of all death row inmates) when the US Supreme Court declared the death penalty unconstitutional in 1972. Charlie got life and remains in prison.
