I got an 8gb ipod nano for xmas but my laptop wont let me download itunes properly?

I have an Advent laptop windows xp but when I go to open itunes after downloading it it wont let me. The message I get is that I need to turn off the compatibility in the properties screen but there is no option to do that, it also tells me I need to have windows 2000!!! Can anyone help me???
