Using mobile internet (dongle) in Thailand (Koh Phi Phi island) - is that possible?

Hi, my friend wants to relocate to Thailand for 6 months and work on the beach... If he bought a dongle in Bankok - would it work on islands like Koh Phi Phi? I'd love to hear from somebody who's done it.... Thank you so much! :o)
