I'm on the brink of losing a toenail. Risk of infection?

It's been a long-time coming. Around two years of mutant toe nail is about to come to an end, at least for one of them. It's running-related. Good riddance to it in a way but a peek at what lies beneath was pretty disturbing. There's no pain or numbness or anything, but I'm just wondering if I ought to be concerned/worried about infection. Rather not have to pay to see a doctor or buy anything for it, of course. Living in Sweden for the year and it's alarmingly expensive. Should I take any precautions? Am letting my foot rot away into oblivion? The thing is, I know it's a domino effect, picking up my mileage and it will likely be the first of many nails to fall by the wayside.
